Hulking Rookie Pitcher Gives Mariners Hope

Ken Griffey Jr Ken Griffey Jr. was back in the Seattle Mariners’ clubhouse on Tuesday, which meant the usual heckling, cackling and general clubhouse mayhem. Spotting Ichiro Suzuki with his back turned, Griffey wrapped him in his arms and tickled him until Suzuki showed proper deference.

“You are not the man!” Suzuki wailed, until finally giving in, to raucous laughter all around.

It was only a year ago, in the same Camden Yards clubhouse, that the Mariners called a team meeting to support Griffey after a report that he had been sleeping by his locker during a game. Griffey soon retired — he is now a team consultant — and Seattle lurched to 101 losses.

The Mariners are still in last place, and their offense is feeble. But optimism reigns, largely because of Michael Pineda, the hulking 22-year-old strike-thrower who faced the Orioles on Tuesday.

The Mariners believe they could contend soon with Pineda and Felix Hernandez, last season’s American League Cy Young Award winner, anchoring their rotation. The presence of Pineda as a second potential ace is especially enticing because Hernandez is signed through 2014, making Seattle unlikely to trade him. Continue reading

Developing a strategy that produces results is one big challenge for fans of basketball gambling. Betting on the college basketball league and the NBA is very different from betting on the NFL and college football. Creating a tactical plan takes time but, if it works well, is eventually worth it. Sports Betting Online

As I said there are many differences between basketball and football betting. For starters, a football season includes some games a week, whereas basketball has several every night. This can be advantageous, or just the opposite; there are many more games on the betting board to choose from, and more profit opportunities, but on the other hand, you can potentially lose more bets, losing a larger sum of money.

The first thing to do when betting on basketball is not to become overwhelmed with the number of games scheduled in the panel. Between the NBA and the college league there may be more than 100 matches on a Saturday. During a typical week there might be more than 300 to 400 games to choose from, and that does not include betting totals. Continue reading

Cliff Lee Accepts Late Bid by the Phillies

All along, the Yankees knew they were fighting the Texas Rangers for Cliff Lee. But they also had a sense of dread, a feeling that a stealth team might steal the latest pitcher of their dreams. They had reason to be worried.

The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to terms late Monday night with Lee, the prized left-hander who pitched for them in the 2009 World Series, according to a baseball official told of the deal.Cliff Lee The official, who was granted anonymity so he could speak freely about a contract that was not completed, said he believed the deal was for five years and at least $100 million.

Several published reports put the dollar figure higher, at $120 million for five years. But whatever the actual figure was, it was clear that Lee had walked away from a considerable amount of money in rejecting the Yankees.

They bid seven years and about $150 million for Lee, who also had a strong offer from the Rangers. But in the end, Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, informed the Yankees that Lee was headed to Philadelphia, where he never wanted to leave after his dominant 2009 postseason run.

Jon Daniels, the Rangers’ general manager, told MLB.com that Lee had called him to tell him his decision personally. Lee helped the Rangers reach their first World Series in October.

“People rag on players for following that last dollar,” Daniels said. “Cliff didn’t do that. I have a lot of respect for him.” Continue reading

Sabathia first to win 18th

CC Sabathia has picked up the Yankees several times this season with dominant performances on the mound.

This time, New York’s bruising lineup did most of the work. CC Sabathia Yankees

Sabathia became the majors’ first 18-game winner, Marcus Thames hit two of New York’s four homers and the Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 12-9 on Saturday night.

Eduardo Nunez hit his first career homer and drove in four runs for New York, which remained tied with Tampa Bay for the AL East lead. Nick Swisher connected for a two-run drive and Robinson Cano had three hits.

Nunez was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when Lance Berkman went on the disabled list Aug. 19. He has made five starts at third base in place of ailing Alex Rodriguez and is batting .333.

“He was the star of the night, going 3 for 4, pretty much saving us,” Sabathia said. Continue reading
